Interesting Bread!

I JUST HAD TO TAKE A PICTURE OF THIS SIGN LOL!!

My mom and I went to a bakery yesterday and we saw some interesting looking bread shaped like a dead man. eyes were painted in red food coloring and it's mouth as well. It also had red paint on the body so that it looked like blood. I was curious as to why they had made bread that was shaped to resemble a dead human body. Then it hit me!! DIA DE LOS MUERTOS!!!! DAY OF THE DEAD!!! In Mexico we celebrate day of the dead on November 1st for children that have passed away and on November 2nd for the adults that have passed away, so the weeks leading to Dia De Los Muertos, Bread is made to offer to the loved ones who have passed away. One type of bread is traditional Day Of The Dead bread which is like a brioche type bread or a panatone type bread. VERY DELICIOUS!! it's basically a simple bread recipe with anise seeds added into the mixture then shaped into a round loaf with extra pieces of dough on the top to resemble bones. So anyway, the baker was nice enough to tell my mom a litte more about why he made the bread and what the tradition is in the part of Mexico he's from as tradition varies from one state to another. ok enough with my yapping here are some pictures. ENJOY!

My Mexican Shivah

)I gotta watch this movie. I am two years late but I will watch it. If you dont understand spanish... I am soooo sorry. this is too funny. LOL Here is the trailer for my mexican shivah basically it's about a Jewish Mexican family who have to get together for the grandfather's funeral. According to Jewish belief, from the moment a Jew is born, he or she is accompanied by two angels: an angel of light and an angel of darkness. With the passing Moishe (75), his family and friends gather in Mexico City to sit shivah, the 7-day Jewish mourning ritual (which is interesting cuz we catholics do a 9-day mourning ritual). The spirit angels, Aleph and Bet, divine accountants, only visible to the camera, watch over the family and calculate which angel will accompany Moishe's soul to the afterlife. The odds are against Moishe from the beginning. Family dysfunction aside, Moishe's friends are all attending for their own motives. And to make matters worse, while performing his duties, a Chevreman, who is a member of the Sacred Funeral Society, is milking the family for all they're worth: charging for kosher food, slippers and various other shivah goods. Emotionally unstable and obsessed with staying young, Moishe's daughter Esther, falls apart; crying over a lost tooth and announcing that she is going to have plastic surgery to fix her entire body immediately after the shivah. Meanwhile, Moishe's son, Ricardo, is attempting to convince a doctor attending the shivah to give his girlfriend an abortion, while his wandering eye leads him to his dead father's lover, Julia Palafox, the notorious mistress for whom Moishe left his family many years earlier. Which angel will win the battle for Moishe's soul? If the shivah reveals anything, it's that Moishe's family and friends loved him with all his flaws and mystery- and most of all his spirit.ENJOY...

CRAZY COOL CAMERA!!!!

This is a very cool camera that I wish I had, basically it's a flying camera called the Ardrone by Parrot. This is pretty cool because those of you with the iphone can buy this thing and control it with ur phone. There's an iphone application you can buy for this thing and honestly my stupid ass would buy it if I had an iphone but I dont because apparently nobody likes their iphone but you gotta admit this is pretty cool. now here's a little bit of what this thing can do. I mean, it's basically a toy with a camera and if you like to splurge on toys for urself, a cool $300.00 is nothing for this toy! LOL. I am posting another video on this that explains just a bit more on this and if you understand french then it's even better! LOL the guy in the second video when you click the read more button, is SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER CUTE!!!! LOL he's a dork but I love dorks ha ha ha ha ok check it out!)

El Superstar movie!

I am trying to find this movie called "El Superstar" it seems pretty funny. Check out the synopses and movie clip/trailer.
Film Summary
Born Jonathan French in Beverly Hills, California and orphaned at three months, this young boy was adopted by his Mexican nanny, Nena (Lupe Ontiveros), and step-father, E.J. (Danny Trejo), and raised to be a good, God-fearing Mexican with a love for ranchero music.

At age 33, in his “Jesus Year,” and now known as Juan Francés, he is a gardener, valet-parker, short-order cook, nanny and janitor by day, but has been blessed by the Virgin of Guadalupe with the talent to sing like the angels. He takes his ranchero act from the small, half-empty soccer bars in East L.A., to a larger music festival audience where he is discovered and quickly swept into Mexican pop stardom.

Caught in the whirlwind of fame, Juan’s everyman appearance and musical style undergo a celebrity make-over. He changes his name to “El Guero” and his songs for the working-class are transformed into heartless reggaeton.

When the dark truth about Juan’s history is revealed to him, he must look at himself and ask: Will he choose the Mexican man in his heart or the bald pink guy he sees in the mirror?

Cactus Chairs!!!!!!

Me being Mexican, I really really really appreciate these cactus chairs!!! WOW not only do they look awesome but they look like one of my absolutely favorite foods!!!!! CACTUS!!! I know what ur thinking cactus?... eeeeww!!! actually it's delicious depending on how you prepare it. My mom always makes me a kick ass cactus salad which basically has cactus that she has boiled cut in strips or kind of shredded or diced, with diced onion, tomato, chopped cilantro and a hint of lime. DELICIOUS!! You can also grill them or lightly toast them with some salt on a "comal" which is a cast iron flat pan with no sides. but if you dont have a comal, a non stick skillet will do the trick. mmmm now I even want corn with nopales on the grill!!! mmmm with beans and my mom's hot sauce!! yeah you cant get more mexican than that ha ha ha ha ha!! whatever, I love my food. When my dad took me to Ziguatanejo, Mexico, I had some absolutely AMAZING cactus tacos. I cant even describe the flavor cuz they were so damn good!! LOL anyway my dad rocks... Ok well check out these Cactus chairs by Designer Valentina Gonzalez. This is truly a work of art VERY creative!!! I love me some nopales!! (spanish for cactus)

Born in Mexico in the late ’70s and with studies on Industrial Design and Indoors Architecture, she reinterprets the classical Louis XV French style to a bright coloured Nopal cactus-like prickled chair. Bringing forward her European and Mexican aesthetic values, she manages to experiment with different textures, materials and colours, thus creating an eye-catching pair of chairs.
In the 18th century Rococo style, which took pleasure in asymmetry, the practice of leaving elements unbalanced for effect is called “contraste”. In Valentina’s Prickly Pair Chairs, the asymmetry and “contraste” are extended even more into a furniture project born out of the creative experience of a Mexican designer in Europe.

The Nopal cactus symbolizes Mexican heritage and national pride. The blend of these cultures is evident in this ‘matching’ pair of chairs. As the designer herself quotes: “Prickly Pair Chairs respects the original 18th century chair, but concludes that its new, hybrid form synthesizes the ‘best of both worlds’; it evokes nostalgia for what was left behind and helps facilitate a sense of belonging in a new environment by fusing two powerful cultural symbols”.

Making Tamales with Mommy!!

Today my mom and I decided to make tamales!!
For those of you who are not familiar with Mexican cuisine, Tamales are basically little bundles of steamed corn dough with chicken or pork and chili sauce inside, they are wrapped in a corn husk and steamed. You can also make tamales with a cheese filling and some slices of jalapeno peppers. those are my favorite!! HOWEVER!!! this time I made mine with a medley of veggies, red chili sauce, Jalapeno pepper slices, and cheese!!! I cant wait to try them. ok I got some pictures for you of the process. take a look. )

Happy 10-10-10!!!!!!

then day of the tenth month of 2010!!! Lots of people are getting married on this day specifically why? I dont know. but I am making tamales!! LOL ok i'll be back in a bit to blog some more.
