Prison Break may be returning on April 17, but let's face it, it's days are numbered. The last few episodes in the fourth season—the chase for the Scylla, Michael getting held, all that, err, magic—is going to be what basically is a swan song, a last goodbye, from the television show that's captivated a fair share of viewers. But, as with everything else, everybody has to move on and pursue new things… wait. I'm getting too cheesy here. It isn't really cheesy! It's not right!
Anyway, all I'm trying to say is, we might still have a taste of the adrenaline rush, and everything else, that made Prison Break such a success. The show's creator, Paul Scheuring, has been at work on another series, and Fox just gave the go-signal for him to produce his latest work, a pilot entitled Masterwork.
If Prison Break sounds ambitious, at least with regards to the story, then Masterwork is ambitious. The pilot is described as a globe-trotting adventure, with the characters racing against time to recover the world's most precious and sought-after artifacts. If that sounds familiar, then you probably have seen either National Treasure or The Da Vinci Code on the big screen. With that, of course, is a huge budget, since it's expected that the show, if it gets the final go-signal, will shoot episodes around the world.
No further details have been released, but for some reason I'm somewhat wary of this. Sure, I shouldn't judge on the basis of a two-sentence blurb about a pilot that's yet to shoot episodes—and one that's yet to become a series, if it will—but I can't help but think of this show's fate. Anything can happen with a huge budget, especially huge expectations. If the show ultimately gets bad reviews—again, we're never certain—this show could get unplugged quickly, especially since the huge budget couldn't possibly justify the low ratings. Ahh, but it's just me being wary. I apologize.
I'm guessing this series hits the air this fall, but we don't really have any details yet. Still, take heart that the brains behind Prison Break—I mean the creator, not Michael Scofield—is still at it. Let's hope he doesn't disappoint, the way he didn't during the last four years. But, before that, we still have Prison Break. Just two more months…
