2008 won't end on time?

I found this story last week but neglected to post it for whatever reason! Who knows where my my brain was vacationing but wherever it was, it prevented me from sharing such an interesting tidbit!

According to the US Naval Observatory, the earth's rotation is gradually slowing down so a "leap second" will be added to December 31 at 6:59:59pm EST! That's right, you get a WHOLE second added to your life =) Don't worry about your PC & cell phone b/c most companies check with the world's atomic clocks and update their time to add the leap second automatically.

The world started adding leap seconds in 1972, sometimes twice a year. This is first leap second since Dec. 31, 2005. This is the fourth year to have a leap day and a leap second. The extra second will make 2008 — already long with an extra day on Feb. 29 — the longest year since 1992.

Here are a few of the comments from other readers:

♥"You mean the Bush Years just got LONGER"
♥"Does this mean Bush is president for 1 more second than we thought?"
♥"good. my watch is 1 second fast right now and i couldn't figure out how to reset it"
♥"Has anyone checked to see if this has anything to do with global warming? Maybe my pickup caused this too."
