Matt Olmstead Spills on Prison Break Season 4

Matt Olmstead sat down with iFMagazine.com to chat about Prison Break Season 4!! Check out what he had to say. Warning, this tidbit might contain spoilers!!

PRISON BREAK is a lot like its characters in some ways: the show is a survivor, but lives every day as though it could be its last. Season Four of the Fox series, which airs Monday nights at 9 PM, has brothers and erstwhile convicts Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) and Michael Schofield (Wentworth Miller) out of jail and trying to turn the tables on the Company, the entity that has set them up for the past three years of woes. Executive producer Matt Olmstead gives iF MAGAZINE an exclusive on what’s going on with the thrill-a-minute series’ new season.

iF MAGAZINE: At what point did the PRISON BREAK team know you were coming back for a fourth season and at what point did you come up with the plot of Season Four?

MATT OLMSTEAD: As soon as the [Writers Guild] strike ended. We sat down and realized that we had no back nine [the last nine episodes of a traditional twenty-two episode season, which had been curtailed by the strike], so we all got in a room and thought, instead of picking up [the story] moments later, let’s use this to our advantage and jump ahead and then drop back and address what happened. We’re jumping ahead a month, so it’s at once surprising where are these people and how did they get here, and we’re also able to fill in the mystery of what happened.

iF: Did you guys pretty much hit the ground running once the writers strike ended?

OLMSTEAD: Absolutely. I think most people did, partly out of relief, but also out of necessity. As soon as it ended, we were all at my house, brainstorming about what we would do with Season Four, so that’s an apt term. We did hit the ground running.

iF: Was one of the big challenges for Season Four coming up with a premise that would put all these characters back together? There’s no way most of them would associate with Rob Knepper’s character T-Bag voluntarily.

OLMSTEAD: That’s exactly right. He was the most difficult character to accommodate. We found a way and believe me, it happened luckily fairly quickly. We would have spent weeks, because we’re not going to lose Rob Knepper, but we were able to get a conceit that did get the guys together, because one of our favorite dynamics of the show are the yard scenes where you have all the cons together. They hate each other, but they all want the same thing, so they have to band together.

It’s a difficult process on a serialized show, keeping it going forward, especially with the con dynamic, but ultimately it’s very rewarding. It’s not a police procedural that you could take a whole hiatus off, show up on Monday and know what you’re going to do, essentially, because the sets are the same. We had to figure out what country we were going to set this show in.

iF: Did you know that William Fichtner as Alexander Mahone was going to pop the way he did when he joined the cast in Season Two?

OLMSTEAD: No. I was aware that he was talented as an actor, but when he came on, that’s one of those things where it was a mutual decision. He only made a one-year deal [for Season Two], and he made a one-year deal last year, so each year, basically, at the end of the year, simply he and I sit down, I tell him what we have in mind creatively, he tells me what he’s looking for, and thankfully, he’s given us what we need, we’ve given him what he needs and so he feels creatively validated and enthusiastic. This year especially, [Mahone] is completely just knocked sideways with a real major tragedy in his life and he’s at once broken and vengeful. [Fichtner] really brings it.

iF: Are there any changes on the writing staff?

OLMSTEAD: We kept the writing staff intact. We’ve brought in a new great new writer named Graham Roland and we were fortunate enough to get a guy named Nick Wooten, who I worked with for a long time on NYPD BLUE, a very good friend of mine, and he ran LAW & ORDER for a couple of years recently. We were able to get him on as a consultant.

iF: Sarah Wayne Callies’ character, Sara Tancredi, is still alive after Lincoln apparently found her severed head in a box last season. Was explaining that a major difficulty?

OLMSTEAD: It actually wasn’t. First, the Sara character gave us the motivation through Season Three and now it’s given us the motivation for Season Four in that, we came up with the idea that if her character was killed, it would turn Michael towards vengeance. So we had that. Sarah was pregnant [in real life] at the time, so she couldn’t come down and film it, so right away, when we shot it and aired it, on the boards, people were saying, "Look, she might really be alive, because you didn’t see her get killed." So we thought, "Well, you know what, let’s put that in our back pocket and see what happens." So we get to Season Four, we have to figure out a motivation for Michael to move forward – what if Sarah’s really alive? It doesn’t take that long to explain it. Basically, the Company thinks if she escaped and the Michael character "knows" that Sarah character has escaped, he won’t do what they want, so let’s keep up the ruse. The explanation is fairly quick. This is addressed in Season Four. Here are the main things. When Michael gets to find out what the deal is, he says, "My brother saw a head." And it’s like, well, what did he really see? When he presses Lincoln, [Lincoln says],"Did I hold the head up and check dental records? No." Nobody would. You see a severed head in a box – if you work someone into a frenzy, they’re more likely to believe something. And then it comes down to, well, L.J. [Lincoln’s son] said he heard her being killed. He didn’t see her being killed. So now you have to figure out what the Company did and you realize they actually pulled it off. They wanted [Michael, Lincoln and L.J.] to believe it, they psyched them up into a state where they were more inclined to believe it, and it worked.

iF: Was moving the storyline and production to Los Angeles after spending your first year in Chicago and your second and third years in Dallas a narrative decision or a production decision?

OLMSTEAD: The latter. It actually cost more to move to Los Angeles than to stay in Dallas, but essentially, we had run our course at the end of two years. We’d kind of shot Dallas out [used all available locations] and the conceit of Season Four was that [the main characters] were going after the Company, so it could be located in one of two places, L.A. or New York, so we had to get out of Dallas.

iF: Is it easier for production now that you’re back in L.A.?

OLMSTEAD: Yes and no. It’s easier because now the writers’ offices are right next to production, whereas [before] we were in L.A. and they were in Dallas, so we have more accessibility. It’s more difficult because now you’re in the mix with a lot of other shows. In Dallas, we were essentially the only game in town, so we could really shoot anywhere, we had much more access. Now you’re in line here, basically. We went to look for a place in the harbor in San Pedro for an exterior for our show. They had ten other offers [from other productions] to film [there]. In Dallas, literally, we could shoot anywhere. There were no competing offers. People were falling over themselves to accommodate us, so that was a real plus.

iF: Is there something different people will get out of Season Four than seasons past?

OLMSTEAD: It’s a culmination of – and I think that the three [seasons] that are behind us laid the groundwork – this feeling of this desperate pursuit of freedom and how special freedom is really reverberates through the show in general and certainly this season. Even though they’re out of prison, they’re still being handled, managed, contained and forced to do something, and you get this feeling that it’s just beyond their grasp and they want it so badly.

iF: Do you have to once more create a season finale that can stand as a series finale or segue into new season?

OLMSTEAD: Yeah. I think that we’ll know halfway through, but this is a serialized show and you’ve got to approach every season as your last, so if it changes and they want another season and everyone wants to be a part of it, then we’ll go from there, but right now, we’re not saving anything, we’re blowing it all out, and if it’s the end, we’ll be ready for it.

Tonight on Prison Break 10/06

While Linc, Sara, Sucre and Roland track down the fifth card in Las Vegas, Michael and Bellick are unavoidably detained in L.A. by a gun-wielding T-Bag, who needs Michael to decipher the bird book. T-Bag, as it happens, is doing the bidding of Gretchen, who made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Meanwhile, Wyatt shows up at Don Self's home; and Sara learns something disturbing about Michael.

MMM....Did You Make That???

This week, We're going to treat ourselves to one of Wentworth Miller's food and drink faves!!! A mimosa and chicken fajitas!!! MMMM!!!!!... Sounds GOOD!!! This week's "MMM...Did You Make That?" section is dedicated to the oh so talented and sexy, Mr. Wentworth Miller!!!!
I'll take the mimosa anytime but unfortunately, I (SoHo) am a vegetarian so I won't be trying Went's food and drink paring. Anyway, First, I gotta go back to my bartending days with this mimosa recipe that is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!! Next, I'll put my culinary degree to use with this chicken fajita recipe (A culinary degree to make chicken fajitas?? YES!! we had Mexican food night in culinary school!! so YES I do have my culinary degree and I sure as hell did make chicken fajitas LOL!!!!)

I know what you're thinking, "SoHo, but you're vegetarian, how do you know if this recipe tastes good?" Well, I USED TO EAT MEAT at one point in my life... Now I cook it for a living but hell, I'll cook it happily even though I won't eat it. Here are these tasty recipes for the delicious fruity mimosa and delicious and satisfying chicken fajitas. ENJOY!!!!!! (And Wentworth, If you are reading this, you need to get your sexy butt in the kitchen and make these recipes! LOL!! trust me, you'll love it!!) If you want, I can help you get over your fear of the stove. Some cuts and burns are not that bad...It's a learning process and you got a story to tell behind each one. LOL!!! I have PLENTY!!! LOL!!!!! ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!

By the way if anybody wants a non alcoholic version of the mimosa, substitute the champagne for club soda (also known as sparkly water).

If you are vegetarian and would like a vegetarian recipe for chicken fajitas, shoot us an email and I'll be glad to share my recipe with you! This recipe serves 8 people so invite some friends over.


FOR THE CHICKEN
♥3 tablespoons lemon juice
♥1 garlic clove, minced
♥1 teaspoon ground cumin
♥1 teaspoon garlic powder
♥1 teaspoon onion powder
♥Chili powder (to taste)
♥Salt (to taste)
♥Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
♥1 1/2 pounds of boneless chicken breasts or thighs (I personally prefer to cook with chicken thighs because it has more flavor and it's a more moist piece of meat but if you like to use chicken breast, that's fine too.) *DO NOT CUT THE CHICKEN IN STRIPS YET!!
♥1 medium onion, halved and sliced lengthwise about a quarter of an inch to half an inch wide

FOR THE VEGGIES
♥1 green bell pepper, sliced into strips about a quarter of an inch to half an inch wide
♥1 red bell pepper, slice into strips about a quarter of an inch to half an inch wide
♥16 corn tortillas or 8 flour tortillas (this will leave each person with 2 corn tortilla fajitas or 1 big flour tortilla fajita) you choose. LOL!! hell, you can do both or divide it however you want.
♥1 lime, juiced, for topping
♥Guacamole for topping (optional)
♥Your favorite salsa for topping (optional)
♥If you like cheese on your fajitas, you're free to shred your favorite cheese and add it to your fajitas as a topping or however you like it.

HOW TO MAKE IT
In a heavy duty resealable plastic bag, combine 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, salt, pepper and chicken. Seal and toss the bag around to coat. Marinate in the refrigerator for about 25 minutes. (A regular plastic grocery bag works too, just tie a knot to close it)

If you plan to grill the chicken, then heat your outdoor or indoor grill pan to medium-high heat.

After the chicken has been marinated for 25 minutes, take it out from the bag and place it on your grill or grill pan. Cook chicken until cooked through, about 5 minutes per side, Slice the chicken into strips

In a large skillet heat up the remaining 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and fry the onions and bell peppers until crisp-tender with some salt and pepper. ( I use a pinch or two of dried oregano and a few drops of lime juice as well when cooking the bell peppers and onions )

Heat tortillas on the out door grill or your indoor grill pan...you can heat the tortillas in a skillet as well or how I heat mine, with a traditional "comal" (Note a "comal" is like a flat cast-iron pan with no sides).

Serve peppers and onions piled on a platter and sliced chicken on top. This is family style.

You can also serve individual plates with chicken and bell pepper/ onion mixture and tortillas on the side.

Guacamole, salsa and sour cream are optional, I usually just put a big bowl of each in the center of the table and everybody just gets as much as they want. Oh and don't forget to add the re fried mashed beans and some rice on the side. ENJOY!!

Sounds good huh? Well what are you waiting for? call up some friends and get to cooking!!!LOL!!

Every good dish, needs a GREAT drink, so here is my recipe for an AMAZING Mimosa!!! ENJOY!!

♥3 cups fresh orange juice
♥1/3 cup Grand Marnier or other orange-flavored liqueur
♥1 teaspoon sugar
♥1 bottle (750-ml size) Prosecco, or your preferred champagne chilled well

In nice big pitcher, stir together the orange juice, liqueur, and sugar in a 2-quart pitcher until sugar is dissolved. Chill until cold, about 1 hour.

Slowly pour in Prosecco, or your preferred champagne stirring to combine into the pitcher that already has the orange juice, liqueur, and dissolved sugar. Serve immediately.

You can combine the orange liqueur, orange juice and sugar one day in advance and right before you're ready to serve, stir in the champagne.

You guys this is DELICIOUS!!!! If you don't like alcohol, you can substitute the 1/3 cup of orange liqueur for another 1/3 cup of orange juice and the champagne for club soda.

There you have it everybody!!! Chicken fajitas and an excellent mimosa!!! Sit back, relax and enjoy life, food, and drink. I know you have to work and have all these other things to do that stress the soul out of you but take it easy, don't stress out. Do one thing at a time chill out...

Even Stephen King loves Prison Break & hopes for a 5th season

Stephen King is one of my favorite authors - actually, he's my mom's favorite but I remember reading a few of his books as a kid & I enjoyed them. Yeah, I know... what 10 year old reads Stephen King horror stories? What can I say? I remember being fascinated with KISS as a little one as well - yeah, not sure what was really wrong with me LOL! I think it was the long tongues & the green stuff they spit that kept my attention =) Anyway, back to what I was about to say...

Stephen King seems to appreciate Prison Break the same way I do! I never thought someone could say something about a TV show that expressed my exact feelings! No, I'm serious! You've gotta read & appreciate his commentary! He basically summarizes the show, up to now, in a few short paragraphs. Pay special attention to the first two paragraphs. I bolded what he said that I couldn't have said better myself [I also added a little note about the DVD's]! Enjoy!

Here's a truth that should be self-evident:

There can be a big difference between what you think is great and what you actually like. When it comes to TV, the finest series currently on offer is — in your Uncle Stevie's humble opinion — Breaking Bad (not AMC's other series, Mad Men, which is just soap opera with a great retro feel). But when it comes to what I'd walk over my grandmother not to miss, the answer is Prison Break. Simple as that. I love Prison Break madly, deeply, truly.

Before you rush to catch up on everything you've missed, let me warn you: If you picked up the first three seasons on DVD and watched them all at once, your frakkin' head would explode. [I can relate to this b/c I've watched 6 episodes back to back!] I've scoped the entire run, and even I have only the dimmest idea of what's going on. And that doesn't detract from my pleasure even a little bit. Here's a rough summary of Our Story So Far, concocted not with help from the usual Internet sources but from my own little Break-obsessed head. EW fact-checkers will try to fix this. I won't let them.

So okay, there are these two brothers, Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield (I don't remember why they don't have the same last name). Linc gets convicted of murdering the Evil President's brother, and is sentenced to death at Fox Mulder Memorial Prison (or maybe it's Fox River; I know there's a Fox in there somewhere because the show's on Fox). Michael commits a robbery so he can also go to prison and bust his brother out. The escape plan is tattooed on Michael's body. (It gets lasered off in season 4: the whole thing, all at once. Ouch!) Michael befriends the warden, who's making a Taj Mahal out of Popsicle sticks, and falls in love with the prison nurse, Sara. In season 3, Sara gets her head chopped off, but it's mistaken identity and she comes back in season 4.

With me so far?

Anyway, Michael and Linc escape with a bunch of assorted fruits and nuts. The most over-the-top is T-Bag, a degenerate Night of the Hunter-type psycho brilliantly played by Robert Knepper. There's also this one guy who's a few fries short of a Happy Meal and wants to live in a painting. Of Holland, I think. (He jumps off a water tower.)

The second season is the best, a Sam Peckinpah shoot-out with the escapees looking for some money buried by — I think — mythic skyjacker D.B. Cooper. They are chased by a badass prison guard named Bellick and a pill-popping FBI lunatic named Alex Mahone. Mahone killed and buried a guy in his backyard, but that's another story. (Oh, and T-Bag lost a hand and had a vet do a transplant, but it didn't work; the hand now looks like something swiped from a department-store dummy.)

Here's the part that kills me: All the survivors except Linc wind up in a Panamanian prison! Yes! It's called Sona (Spanish for ''Fox Mulder''). This is the strike-shortened third season, and it's gotta be the sweatiest 13 episodes of TV ever filmed. As an added taste treat, the swag-bellied Bellick (Wade Williams) stumbles through the first two in a pair of filthy undershorts. Not a yummy picture.

Needless to say, there's another escape. T-Bag gets lost in the desert and is forced to chow down on his running buddy. When The Bag finally catches a ride, the driver sizes up his nausea and inquires, ''What's wrong, man? Eat some bad Mexican?'' Classy! Well, you know what they say: If you can't eat the one you love, eat the one you're with.

Turns out the president's brother was murdered by a shadowy outfit called The Company, and now Linc, Michael, the resurrected Sara, and their cohorts must take the bad guys down, including dragon lady Susan B. Anthony (sometimes known as Gretchen — don't ask).

What makes this so much damned fun are bright exteriors, crisp cutting, outrageous action sequences, and, most of all, the acting ensemble. I especially enjoy William Fichtner as Alex Mahone — Fichtner's probably the best character actor on TV. These guys play it straight, so the audience does the same. There's also a crazy existential subtext: No matter what these hapless escapees do or how fast they run, they always end up...booya!...back in prison.

For season 5, I hope it's a gulag in Siberia.

Looks like Dom spotted the paps taking pics of him! In two of the pics, the guy running with (or seemingly with) Lincoln is the same one from season 2. I don't remember his name, but he was Lincoln's friend, the one who helped him at the shipyard. Guess we'll have to wait & see what's up with that! A car crash, a suitcase full of money & Lincoln's friend running with a big gun - sounds like a action-packed upcoming episode!

Gretchen & T-Bag Spinoff? Hmm...

I don't know about ya'll, but I was never a fan of a female Prison Break LOL! I honestly can't say that I would have even watched that. Sounds like garbage to me, so I'm glad that there's talk of not doing it!

Ausiello from Entertainment Weekly says: "Based on what I’m hearing about the next few episodes, producers should bag the women in prison spinoff and pitch Fox Gretchen and T-Bag instead."

He also said (about Prison Break possibly being cut early this season): “The ratings aren’t great, but Fox already ordered a full, 22-episode season and they have yet to amend that order.”

This is good news for us Prison Break fans! I can't see them doing this but you never know. It is reassuring to know they haven't decided to cut it. I'm happy!
